The "Daily Show" host sat down with his longtime friend and collaborator on May 19 during the third-to-last episode of "The Late Show," whichwas canceled by CBSin July.

Stewart said he was there to "celebrate my friend" and the "joy" his show brought "to so many people," and he applauded the host for maintaining "such grace through this process."

He also mocked CBS for ending "The Late Show" and alluded to recent changes at the network's news division, where several journalists havedeparted roles at "CBS Evening News"and "60 Minutes" following Bari Weiss' hiring as editor-in-chief.

"I just think it's so smart what CBS is doing," he said sarcastically. "I just think it's such a good move, to take this show off the air, and then to also ruin your evening news, and then reduce '60 Minutes' to, like, six good ones. Here's what I believe they're doing: I think they're tanking for a draft pick."

Later, Stewart got in another dig at CBS when he mentioned his 92-year-old mother. "In five more years, she'll be CBS' target demographic," he joked.

A farewell to 'Late Show'sStephen Colbert, TV's gallant comic avenger

With just two days until the final "Late Show," Stewart spoke with Colbert about his own experience of being fired, joking that "it's the best!" In 1995, Stewart's "The Jon Stewart Show" was canceled, and he also voluntarily stepped away from "The Daily Show" in 2015 before returning in 2024.

The comedian relayed the "profound" advice he received fromDavid Lettermanafter his show was canceled: "Don't confuse cancellation with failure," though Stewart joked the former "Late Show" host also told him that "in this case, it is also a failure."

Stewart hosts the Monday episodes of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, which has the same parent company, Paramount Skydance, as CBS. "You now are the only person in the corporation left in late night," Colbert told Stewart. "Good luck!" Stewart found this "chilling" but quipped that his only "saving grace" is that "I don't think Trump has cable."

Paramount said in July that canceling "The Late Show" was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." But critics alleged the move was intended to appease the Trump administration amid a merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, which required Trump administration approval.

The Writers' Guild of Americasaid last year it had"significant concerns that 'The Late Show's' cancelation is a bribe, sacrificing free speech to curry favor with the Trump Administration as the company looks for merger approval." The merger was completed in August.

After praising Colbert as a "tremendous human, and one of my favorite people," Stewart presented Colbert with a gift: a pair of luxurious reclining chairs, to show him "the life you can lead, and the life that I am leading, now that I am not really in show business."

Stephen Colbertsays CBS might have 'saved my life' with cancellation

Colbert rose to prominence working with Stewart as a correspondent on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," which led Colbert to get his own spinoff, "The Colbert Report," in 2005. Stewart was a cocreator of "The Colbert Report," which for years aired directly after "The Daily Show" until Colbert moved to "The Late Show" in 2015.

Stewart has appeared on "The Late Show" many times, including after he left "The Daily Show" in 2015. At one point, he and Colbert had a running joke that Stewart lived under Colbert's desk, so he would pop up whenever he had thoughts to share on the news. Stewart is also a producer on "The Late Show."

Colbert now has just two episodes of "The Late Show" remaining. On May 20, Bruce Springsteen will stop by for a performance, and Colbert will take his own "Colbert Questionert," a series of lighthearted questions, "featuring special guests." The series finale of "The Late Show" is scheduled for May 21, though no guests for the final show have been announced.

NEED TO KNOW

  • He became a father when he welcomed daughters Audrey and Georgia with his ex-wife and former teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau

  • Georgia and Audrey have both started families of their own

Vili Fualaauis both a father and a grandfather.

Vili was previously married to his former sixth-grade teacher,Mary Kay Letourneau, who started sexually abusing him he when he was 12 years old. When the abuse was eventually exposed, Letourneau was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape and was sentenced to over seven years in prison.

Before she reported to prison, she and Vili had conceived their first child. She welcomed daughter Audrey Lokelani Fualaau on May 23, 1997. She became pregnant for a second time and welcomed daughter Georgia on Oct. 16, 1998, while she was in prison.

Following her release from prison in 2004, Vili and Letourneau married on May 21, 2005. They remained married for 12 years before Vilifiled for separation, which was later granted in August 2019. On July 7, 2020, Letourneaudied from cancerat 58 years old.

Vili has since moved on andwelcomed his third daughter, Sophia, in May 2022.

From their views on their parents’ relationship to their personal lives, here’s everything to know about Vili Fualaau’s children.

Audrey was conceived before Letourneau's arrest

Letourneau began sexually abusing Vili just days shy of his 13th birthday, tellingOprah Winfreythat she considered Vili to be "the love of my life."

Though Vili said after her arrest that they had planned the pregnancy, Letourneau denied it but added she was “not angry” when she learned she was expecting.

Audrey was born in May 1997, and three months later, her mom pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape.

Georgia was born during Letourneau's prison sentence

The judge presiding over Letourneau’s case sentenced her to seven and a half years in prison, but suspended all but six months if she agreed to enter a treatment program for sex offenders and took prescription medication for bipolar disorder. She also was to have no contact with Vili.

Letourneau was then released on Jan. 2, 1998. However, she told friends that she stopped taking her medication. Exactly a month later, Vili called Letourneau, and the two were found the next morning in her car.

She went back to jail for violating her parole and served a seven-year sentence. However, in the month she was out of prison, Letourneau became pregnant with Georgia, and the baby was born in jail in October of that year.

Vili later shared in a20/20interview withBarbara Waltersthat he struggled with depression for a long time, especially as he didn’t feel supported after having two kids while still a teenager.

"I'm surprised I'm still alive today," he said. "I went through a really dark time."

The couple told PEOPLE in 2006 that while Letourneau was in jail, Vili’s mom had custody of their daughters, and they were working on getting it back.

“We are grateful for all she’s done and we all worked really hard to stay focused on what’s best for the girls,” Letourneau said. “It’ll be nice to take the girls to Disneyland and not have to ask the state or notify Vili’s mom.”

They are accepting of their parents’ former relationship, even with the history of abuse

In 2018, when Audrey was 21 and Georgia was 19, they did an interview with Australia’sSunday Nightin which theyopened up about their parents’ relationshipand what it was like being raised by Vili and Letourneau.

“I think I understand it,” Audrey said. “It was surprising to people. It’s not really been brought to our attention, just because we grew up with it, so we’re adapted to it.”

The girls said that while Letourneau was the stricter parent while they were growing up — with Audrey adding that she “literally cut the padding out of my bra once” because of her rules on how to properly dress — Vili was more lenient.

“He definitely feels like a young dad now that I’m at that adult age to where I can go to a bar,” Audrey said. “He’s like a ‘friend dad.' ”

They struggled with their parents’ split

When Vili filed for separation from Letourneau in May 2017, his daughters struggled.

“They’re tryingnot to choose sides,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “They had two great parents who loved and supported them. So now they’re returning the love and support to both their dad and their mom.”

The source was close to Letourneau and said the girls were close to their dad but also had a solid relationship with their mother.

“They’re very good girls,” the source added. “They are wise beyond their years and they understand that relationships are a complex thing.”

Ultimately, while it was hard to see the family “fall apart,” the source noted that Audrey and Georgia were both “old enough” to understand what was happening and “know that they’re loved very much.”

Sophia was born in 2022

PEOPLE confirmed that Vili welcomed a third daughter, Sophia, two years after Letourneau’s death, in November 2022. Georgia announced the news on Instagram, which was seen by PEOPLE, with a photo of the newborn in the hospital.

"Hi Sophia, I'm your big sister! You're so beautiful, I can't wait to watch you grow. I'll be right here by your side no matter what ! I love you 💕," she captioned the photo.

Vili has chosen to keep the identity of Sophia’s mother and any other details about the baby girl private.

Georgia welcomed her first child in January 2024

Georgia and her longtime boyfriendwelcomed their first child, a baby boy, in January 2024.

The new momconfirmed her pregnancyto PEOPLE in September 2023. “I’m very excited to become a mother," she said. "I have an amazing mother to prepare me for these years to come.”

Georgia and her boyfriend, a delivery driver and aspiring boxer who prefers to remain private, had been dating for more than six years, and at one point, he even lived with her and Letourneau. While they had talked about marriage and plan on it, there was “no ring” yet, she said.

The couple's son is Vili's first grandchild. “I just know that he’s going to be the greatest grandfather ever," Georgia told PEOPLE ahead of giving birth.
