A Royal Guide to Queen Elizabeth's 14 Great-Grandchildren

Queen Elizabethdied in 2022, but her legacy lives on — especially through the big family she left behind.

Britain's longest-reigning monarch was not only a mother to her four children —King Charles,Princess Anne,Prince AndrewandPrince Edward— but she also saw the birth of her eight grandchildren, includingPrince William, andPrince Harry, in her lifetime.

And the royal line continues to grow: On Jan. 22, 2025,Princess Beatriceannounced that she and husbandEdoardo Mapelli Mozziwelcomed their second child together, a girl whose name included a tribute to the late Queen.

Savannah Phillips, 15

Peter and Autumn Phillipsare parents toQueen Elizabeth's eldest great-grandchild,Savannah Phillips, who was born on Dec. 29, 2010. Coincidentally, Peter, the son ofPrincess Anne,is also eldest grandchild of the monarch.

At the time of her birth, Savannah was 12thin line to the throne— but the arrivals ofPrince George,Princess Charlotte, andPrince Louisbumped her down the list.

Furthermore, due to the arrivals ofMeghan Markle's,Princess Beatrice's, andPrincess Eugenie's children, respectively, Savannahnow sits 20th in line.

Savannah is the first grandchild of Princess Anne andMark Phillips, her ex-husband.

Isla Phillips, 14

Peter and Autumn Phillips welcomed their second child, daughterIsla Elizabeth Phillips, on March 29, 2012. She sitsjust behind sister Savannah in the line of successionto the throne.

Isla's first name is uniqueto the royal family. It is the Scottish word for "island." Her middle name is, of course, a nod to her great-grandmotherQueen Elizabeth.

Isla is the second grandkid of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.

Prince George, 12

Prince WilliamandKate Middletonwelcomed their first child, Prince George, on July 22, 2013.

George is named afterhis great-grandmother's father, King George VI. The young boy sitssecond in line to the British thronebehind his father.

When George isn'tlearning history, French and even ballet, he's proven to be apro page boyand is a fan ofThe Lion King.

Prince George is the first grandchild of King Charles and the latePrincess Diana,his ex-wife.

Mia Tindall, 12

The Queen's granddaughter,Zara Tindall, and Zara's husband,Mike Tindall, welcomed their first child, daughter Mia Tindall, on Jan. 17, 2014. Mia iscurrently 23rd in line to the throne.

The Tindallswent with a namenot found in the family for their firstborn. Mia stems from the Egyptian word for "beloved" and is Italian for "mine."

Mike toldThe Sunday Timesin May 2017 that Mia was their "saving grace" after Zara experienced a miscarriage.

Mia is the third grandchild of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.

Princess Charlotte, 10

Prince William and Katewelcomed their second child, daughterPrincess Charlotte, on May 2, 2015. She is the younger sister of Prince George.

Thanks to theSuccession to the Crown Act 2013, birth order determines who will become the next king or queen of the U.K., regardless of gender. Had it not been in place, Princess Charlotte would have lost her spot to younger brother,Prince Louis. She's just behind brother George at third in the line of succession.

Prince Louis, 7

Prince William and Katewelcomed their third child, sonPrince Louis, on April 23, 2018. He is the younger brother of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

His full name is Prince Louis Arthur Charles, in which all three names area nod to royal family members. He sits just behind his sister atfourth in lineof succession to the throne.

He first showed offhis big smileat his christening — and has beencharming the worldwith his contagious grins ever since.

Prince Louis is the third grandchild of King Charles and Princess Diana.

Lena Tindall, 7

Zara and Mike Tindall welcomed their second child, daughter Lena Tindall, on Jan. 18, 2018. She is the younger sister of Mia and comes after Zaraexperienced two miscarriages.

"You need to go through a period where you don't talk about it because it's too raw but, as with everything, time's a great healer," Zara told the U.K.'sSunday Times.

Lena sits behind Mia at number24th in the lineof succession to the throne.

Prince Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, 6

Duke and Duchess of Sussex,Prince HarryandMeghan Markle, welcomed their first child, sonArchie Harrison, on May 6, 2019.

The couple broke with tradition when theygave him a namethatsurprised the oddsmakers. Archie issixth in lineof succession, immediately behind his dad.

When King Charles, was coronated in 2023, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Archieinherited the title of "prince"as a grandchild of the sitting monarch.

He is the fourth grandchild of King Charles and Princess Diana.

Lucas Philip Tindall, 5

Zara andMike Tindallwelcomed their third child, son Lucas Philip, on March 21, 2021. The coupleannounced they were expectingin December 2020.

The baby boy, who is the fifth grandkid of Princess Anne, arrived in dramatic fashion.

Proud dad Mike revealed on hisThe Good, The Bad & The Rugbypodcast that his sonwas born at home in the bathroomwhen it was apparent Zara wouldn't make it to the hospital in time. He is 25th in line to the throne.

August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, 3

Princess Eugenieand husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed their first child together, sonAugust Philip Hawke Brooksbank, on Feb. 9, 2021. Theyannounced that they were expectingin September 2020.

Princess Eugeniemarked the occasion with a sweet black-and-white photo posted toInstagram, along with a caption of three blue hearts. He is13th in the line of succession, behind his mom.

On Feb. 20, the coupleintroduced their baby to the world, sharinga few photos of their familyto the platform.

This is the first grandchild for Eugenie's parents,ex-Prince Andrewand his ex-wifeSarah Ferguson.

Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, 3

Prince HarryandMeghan Marklewelcomed their second child, daughterLilibet "Lili" Diana, to the world on June 4, 2021. The coupleannounced Meghan's pregnancy on Valentine's Day.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet," read astatementfrom the couple. "Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales."

Lili'sfirst birthdayfell during her great-grandmother'sPlatinum Jubileecelebrations, in which Meghan and Harry shared anadorable new photo of her.

When her grandfather, King Charles was coronated, Lili alsoinherited the title of "princess."She is currentlyseventh in linefor the throne, behind her brother Archie.

Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, 3

Princess BeatriceandEdoardo Mapelli Mozziwelcomed their first child together, daughter Sienna Elizabeth, to the world on Sept. 18, 2021. (Mozzi also shares son Wolfie with ex-wife Dara Huang.)

While it's obvious to the baby girl's middle name is a sweet tribute to Beatrice's grandmother Queen Elizabeth, her first name incorporatesseveral thoughtful nods to her mother Fergie— including the red hair shared by the three generations of women in their family.

She hasjoined the line of succession to the throneon the royal family'sofficial websiteand is listed at the10th spot, just behind her mother, as "Miss Sienna Mapelli Mozzi."

Sienna's birth meansPrincess Eugenieand all the royals behind her are now bumped down a notch in theroyal pecking order.

The baby girl is the second grandchild of ex-Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, 2

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank welcomed their second child together, another boy, whom they namedErnest George Ronnie Brooksbank. Born on May 30th, 2023, Ernie was named after "his great great great Grandfather George, his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald," Princess Eugenie revealed in a post shared to Instagram.

The first grandchild to be born after Queen Elizabeth's death on Sept. 8, 2022, he is 14th in the line of succession.

Athena Elizabeth Rose, 1

Athena Elizabeth Rose (whose middle name is a tribute to Beatrice’s late grandmother,Queen Elizabeth) was born Jan. 22, 2025,a few weeks ahead of schedule.

"Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday, 22nd January, at 12:57pm. The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces," Buckingham Palace said in a statement onX.

Buckingham Palace announced on Oct. 1 that Princess Beatrice was expecting hersecond childwith Mozzi.

"Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their second child together in early spring; a sibling for Wolfie, aged eight, and Sienna, aged three,"Buckingham Palace said in the statement, which was accompanied by a photo of Mozzi walking with the elder two children.

According to the statement,King Charles, Beatrice's uncle, shared their joy. "His Majesty The King has been informed and both families are delighted with the news," the statement read.

The new royal sits at number 11 in theline of succession.

Shelly Kittleson, US journalist kidnapped in Iraq, is freed

An American journalist kidnapped in Iraq has been released, according to multiple reports.

Iran-aligned Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah said on April 7 that it would release abducted U.S. journalist Shelly Kittleson, reported Reuters, theNew York Timesand theAssociated Press.The group added that she must leave Iraq immediately.

Kittleson, 49, was kidnapped on March 31 on a busy street in central Baghdad, Reuters andUSA TODAY previouslyreported. Both U.S. and Iraqi officials said Kataib Hezbollah was responsible for the abduction, and the group offered on April 1 to negotiate with the Iraqi government for her release in exchange for several militia members being held by authorities, according tothe New York Times.

A spokesperson for Kataib Hezbollah said Kittleson was freed "in appreciation of the patriotic positions” of Iraq’s prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who had been negotiating for her release, reported the AP and the Times.

“This initiative will not be repeated in the future,” the militia's statement said, according to the same sources. "We are in a state of war waged by the Zionist-American enemy against Islam and in such situations, many considerations are disregarded.”

The U.S. and Iraqi governments have not yet confirmed Kittleson's release or whereabouts. USA TODAY reached out to Iraq's Ministry of Interior and the U.S. State Department for comment.

Who is Shelly Kittleson?

Kittleson is an independent journalist living in the Middle East,USA TODAY previously reported.Her work has appeared in multiple publications over the past decade, including Al Majalla, Al-Monitor, ANSA and RAI Radiotre, among other freelance work,according to her public LinkedIn account. Other social media profiles show she has worked for publications like BBC World Service and Politico.

Kittleson also won the coveted Italian journalism award Premio Caravella in 2017 for her war zone reporting, according to the Italian Institute for International Political Studies.

Middle East news siteAl-Monitor, which first identified Kittleson upon abduction, said she has covered several wars in the region and had contributed articles to the outlet. The publication called for her "safe and immediate release" after Iraq's Ministry of Interior confirmed the kidnappingin a March 31 Facebook post.

Americanofficials had previously warned Kittlesonof threats against her, according to a social media post from Dylan Johnson, a U.S. State Department senior official. Johnson said in other posts that the State Department and FBI were working to secure her release "as quickly as possible."

Kittelson is originally from Mount Horeb, a small village in south-central Wisconsin, her mother, Barb Kittleson,told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,part of the USA TODAY network, on April 1.

"She just wanted to help people. She’s just a journalist," her mother said.

ICE agents shoot and wound man during traffic stop in Central California

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot a man, who was then taken to a hospital, while attempting to arrest him during a targeted traffic stop Tuesday in California’s Central Valley, the agency said.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said the ICE officers fired defensive shots after the person they stopped attempted to run an agent over, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

The shooting happened near Interstate 5 in Patterson, about 90 miles south of Sacramento.

DHS identified the person shot as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant and “18th Street Gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder.”

Attorney Patrick Kolasinski, who is representing Mendoza Hernandez, disputed the DHS account of the encounter and said the agents may have mistaken his client for someone with a similar name, theAssociated Pressreported.

CNN reached out to Kolasinski for comment.

Mendoza Hernandez, a day laborer, has a 2-year-old daughter and is engaged to a US citizen, Kolasinski told the AP.

Mendoza Hernandez’s family wasn’t able to immediately see him in the hospital, but were told he was stable, Kolasinski added.

Two dashcam videos obtained by CNN show a car crossing over the highway lane divider after being surrounded by agents. One agent is seen running out of the way of the car. It’s not clear exactly when agents fired at the vehicle because the footage does not have sound.

“As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over. Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public,” the DHS statement said.

DHS says its agents have been the target of increasing violence, citing more than180 vehicle attackssince Trump’s second term started. But the administration’s initial accounts of shootings involving federal agents have, in some cases, changed over time – or been proven wrong altogether.

The FBI is conducting an investigation, Acting Special Agent in Charge Eugene Wu said. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office told CNN it’s assisting, and it confirmed no local law enforcement was involved with the incident.

Dashcam footage captures incident

At least three law enforcement agents are seen surrounding a black vehicle on a road near Interstate 5, video obtained by CNN shows. The black vehicle then backs up and its passenger-side door hits another car on the road.

Agents then point their guns at the vehicle as it stops for about two seconds. The car then turns left and crosses over the highway lane divider, while an agent runs out of the way of the car.

It’s not clear when exactly agents fired at the vehicle.

Christina Valencia, whose Tesla captured one of the videos obtained by CNN, said she noticed the flashing lights from her car.

“All of a sudden I heard like a shot fired … and then maybe like 10 seconds later, I heard about five or six more go off,” she said.

CNN cannot independently confirm Valencia’s account of the gunfire.

From there, the two agents ran to their trucks and then drove in the direction of the suspect, she said. They ultimately ended up under a nearby overpass.

When the shots started, she said she put her car in reverse. “I was scared because I was like there’s nowhere for me to go,” Valencia said.

Credibility of DHS accounts questioned in prior car-involved incidents

While agents have beensubjected to violencesince the start of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration last year, DHS has also at times faceda crisis of credibilityregarding claims it has made in the aftermath of some high-profile incidents. In arrests and use-of-force encounters across the country, versions provided by DHS of some eventshave been contradictedby eyewitness accounts and bystander video and challenged by independent judges.

Altercations in or around vehicles have been asteady symbolof the administration’s immigration crackdown, includingcar crashesbetween federal agents and people who try to flee, traffic stopsturned violentand alleged rammings involving pro-immigrant activists.

The phrase “weaponized his/her vehicle” has beenrepeated by officialsincluding former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem when she described Renee Good, a Minneapolis mother shot and killed by an ICE agent this year. Good’s death prompted widespread protests and her burgundy SUV has become a recognizable symbol of the chaotic immigration operations in Minneapolis.

The Trump administration has also come under criticism for deporting migrants it alleges are gang members, without providing evidence, such as in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It accused wrongly deported Abrego Garcia of being an active member of MS-13 - a claim his lawyer and family deny. Abrego Garcia is currentlyfighting against deportationin federal court.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has urged federal law enforcement to collaborate with state and local partners in investigating Tuesday’s shooting.

“As is established practice, we expect our federal law enforcement partners to appropriately collaborate with state and local law enforcement as this matter is investigated,” Newsom’s office saidon X.
